Discover oregano
The Greek origin of its name evokes the splendour of the mountains. Oregano thrives on rocky Italian hillsides and is one of the most recognisable Mediterranean kitchen herbs.
Drying oregano
Gather the stems into small bundles and dry them gently. An oven set to around 50°C can also be used, checking carefully until the leaves are dry. Store the dried leaves in an airtight container away from moisture.
In the kitchen
Use oregano with vegetables, cheese, sauces, meat and fish. It is especially familiar on bread, pizza and tomato-based dishes.
Growing and practical tips
Oregano likes a sunny position and does well in modest soil. It tolerates dry conditions but needs protection from severe frost. Harvest flowering stems for drying.
