Discover basil
Small, velvety, emerald-green leaves and a fresh, sweet fragrance make basil a symbol of Ligurian cooking. It adds character to a wide range of dishes and is the heart of pesto alla genovese.
Pesto: a taste of home
Traditional Genoese pesto brings together seven ingredients: basil from Genova Pra’, Ligurian extra virgin olive oil, Italian pine nuts, Parmigiano Reggiano, Fiore Sardo pecorino, garlic and coarse sea salt. The traditional preparation uses a mortar and pestle. Pound the ingredients gradually, then incorporate the oil to obtain a fragrant sauce.
In the kitchen
Use fresh leaves in pesto, tomato dishes, salads and Mediterranean cooking. Add them gently to protect their delicate aroma.
Growing and practical tips
Basil can grow in pots or on a sunny balcony. It prefers a mild Mediterranean climate and needs protection from frost. Start from seeds or young plants; with suitable care, the first leaves can develop in around a month.
